Cinematography

COLLATERAL

This close up implies that this character is important. It also emphasises certain props such as the sunglasses which suggests to the audience that he wants to be anonymous and wants to hide his identity, which therefore brings in conventional themes of the thriller genre.

Shallow focus is used in the foreground here which draws the audiences attention to the background, implying that this character is important. Changes in focus is often used in thriller to represent importance.

Framing is carefully used in this shot, placing the briefcase in the middle, which connotes it's importance. This prop is convention al in the thriller genre as they tend to be associated with money, deals, and weapons.

This two shot shows the relationship between the two characters.

This establishing shot that is used emphasises that he is hidden, unnoticeable and doesn't stand out. The shot shows the urban location which is another convention of thriller films.

LIMITLESS

This close up shot of the door emphasises the banging on the door. It makes the audience ask questions like 'Who is it?' 'Where are they?' 'Are they wanting to get in?' 'Are they wanting to get out?'

The establishing shot puts the audience in perspective as it sets the location. We could compare the boxes here, to the briefcase in Collateral as we do not know what is inside them. This makes the audience want to carry on watching as an enigma is created.

This tracking movement is exciting, 'thrilling' the audience. The camera movement also shows the class of the character/s as it finally reveals the penthouse.

This is a close up of danger, and danger is a convention theme that runs through thriller movies.

SWORDFISH

The ident is 'poor quality' connoting danger. Both Limitless and Collateral have portrayed danger, however not in this way.

This close up shot of this character implies that he is very important as it all that the audience can see. The editing is also very slow, meaning the audience are focused on him for a long time.

This close up shows dangerous props. This is also done in other opening sequence, making danger a convention of the thriller genre.

This mid shot shows a different character, however we cannot see him as well as we could the other. The shot is also cut very quickly, which contrasts with the cinematography used in association with the other character, therefore emphasising  the other characters importance. This may also imply to the audience that the other character has more status than the character shown in this shot.

The low angle used here connotes that the character is weak.

This mid shot shows three men with guns and in suits. This connotes danger.
